Buying Guide

If you are considering a new washer you might like to know that the average washer lasts about 10 years.  Since a washer is an appliance that is going to be with you for a while, make your selection with the future in mind.  If you have a growing family, purchasing a large capacity washer is important.

There are two basic types of washers: front loading and top loading. Front loaders wash clothes using a tumbling action.  Top loaders usually typically have an agitator that moves the clothes around in the soapy water.  The front loader style of washing is not as tough on clothes as the top loader, but both types get clothes clean.  Front loaders generally use less water, have the lowest operating cost, and are more expensive than top loaders.

Your washer uses hot water and electricity to operate.  We recommend purchasing an EnergyStar washer to maximize your savings.

EnergyStar washers are rated 37% better than minimum washer standards.

Installation Details

We will ask you how wide the narrowest door is that the washer must pass through.  It may be necessary to remove doors from hinges to allow enough room. We also recommend new fill hoses.  A hose that bursts can results in major damage and expense.

Delivery, installation, and removal of the old washer is available for Laclede Gas customers and in the Metro East.  Ask your representative for details.

Does your current washer shake when it spins?  Top loaders and front loaders can both shake.  The best way to prevent shaking is to install the washer on a level, solid surface.  Follow all installation instructions exactly.

Fun Facts

About 95% of homes have a washing machine.

The agitator type of washing machine was invented in the 1920s.

On long voyages, sailors washed clothes by dragging them in a cloth bag behind a ship.  Forcing the water through the clothes did the cleaning for them.
