Buying Guide FAQs Cooking with Gas

Buying Guide
Selecting a gas range over and electric range is an easy choice.  Gas offers you the visible control and is the chef's choice.  But deciding which gas range to purchase can take some time and effort.

Here are a few features to consider in new range...

Range Size and Style
The standard size for most ranges is 30".  The two types are freestanding which is the most common, drop in, and slide in.  Drop in and slide in ranges are similar.  The range is built into the countertop and cabinets.  The freestanding range is usually between two cabinets, or is actually freestanding.  If you are remodeling, choosing the type of range is part of cabinet and countertop selection process.  If you are considering replacing your existing range with new, simply measure the width of the range and you will know the size you need.  We offer ranges as small as 20 inch for apartments.

Ranges generally come in black, white, biscuit, and stainless.  Some models combine colors.  Of course, this choice depends on your kitchen decor and your personal preferences.

Recommended Cooking Features

  • Sealed burners prevent spills from flowing down under the cook top.  This feature is a big time saver is you have a boil over.
  • Simmer burners allow the flame to be reduced to a very low level.  Perfect for those times when just tiny bit of heat is required.
  • Power burners are useful for stir frying of heating up large pots in a hurry.
  • Convection ovens circulate the heated air in the oven and speed up the baking process.  Convection ovens can save energy and allow you to lower cooking temperature in some cases.

Cooking with Gas

Gas cooking is well over 100 years old.  In the 1800s, most home used coal or wood fires for preparing meals.  The open hearth was common and cast iron pots were hung in large fireplaces amid the sizzle and pop of a wood fire.

Around the turn of the century, manufactured gas became available in urban areas.  This gas was made from coal and was pumped into storage tanks throughout the city.  Underground pipes distributed the gas to homes.  The gas companies at the time promoted gas cooking as a way of expanding the market beyond gas street lights.

In the 1940s natural gas arrived and manufactured gas was phased out.  That era's natural gas ranges had match lit ovens and pilot lights for the cooktop.  During the 1980s the pilot light was gradually phased out in favor of electronic ignition on the oven and the cooktop.

Today's gas ranges put you in charge.  Instant control of the cook top flame and precise control of the oven makes your gas range a dependable performer for many years.  No wonder that even today, getting it right is synonymous with now you're cooking with gas!
