Backup Generators
Natural gas
backup generators restore your power during an outage, providing emergency electricity and security. The generator is powered by an engine running on natural gas. The system includes an automatic transfer switch that senses an outage. If you lose utility power, the grid power supply is disconnected and the source of power becomes the generator. The most critical circuits, such as the central air conditioning, lights, and computers are restored within a few minutes. You select which circuits will run off of the generator. The generator is sized according to the amount of power it can produce. Units that can handle central air conditioners are usually 12kW and up. To give you an idea of what 12kW is, it would be 12,000 watts, or about 12 hair dryers worth of power or 120 light bulbs.
When utility power is restored, the transfer switch turns of the power from the generator and switches back over to the grid. You don't have to do anything, the system works automatically.
The units start at about the size of a central air conditioner. Large homes may required a larger unit.
